Polynomfunktioner

A polynomfunktion, or polynomial function, is a mathematical expression consisting of variables and coefficients, involving only the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and non-negative integer exponents of variables. Polynomial functions are fundamental in algebra and are used in various fields such as physics, engineering, economics, and computer science.

The general form of a polynomial function in one variable x is given by:

P(x) = aₙxⁿ + aₙ₋₁xⁿ⁻¹ + ... + a₁x + a₀

where aₙ, aₙ₋₁, ..., a₁, a₀ are constants (coefficients) and n is a non-negative integer. The highest power of x in the polynomial is called the degree of the polynomial, and the coefficient of the highest degree term is called the leading coefficient.

Polynomial functions can have any number of terms. A term with a zero coefficient is usually omitted. For example, the polynomial 3x² + 0x + 5 can be simplified to 3x² + 5. Polynomials can also have any number of variables, such as P(x, y) = 2x² + 3xy + y².

Polynomial functions have several important properties. They are continuous and differentiable everywhere, and they can have both real and complex roots. The Fundamental Theorem of Algebra states that every non-zero, single-variable polynomial with complex coefficients has exactly as many roots in the complex plane as its degree, counting multiplicity.

Polynomial functions are used to model a wide range of phenomena, from the trajectory of a projectile to the growth of a population.
