Polymerityyppejä refer to the diverse classifications of polymers based on various characteristics. One common way to categorize polymers is by their origin, dividing them into natural polymers and synthetic polymers. Natural polymers, such as cellulose, starch, and proteins, are found in living organisms. Synthetic polymers, like polyethylene, polyvinyl chloride (PVC), and polystyrene, are manufactured through chemical processes.

Another classification is based on the polymer's molecular structure. Linear polymers consist of long, unbranched chains. Branched polymers have side chains extending from the main polymer backbone. Cross-linked polymers are formed when polymer chains are interconnected by covalent bonds, creating a more rigid and durable network.

Polymers can also be classified by their response to heat. Thermoplastics can be repeatedly softened by heating and hardened by cooling, allowing them to be molded into different shapes. Examples include polyethylene and nylon. Thermosetting polymers, on the other hand, undergo irreversible chemical changes upon heating, becoming permanently rigid and insoluble. Bakelite and epoxy resins are common thermosets. Elastomers, a subtype of polymers, exhibit rubber-like elasticity, meaning they can be stretched significantly and return to their original shape. Natural rubber and synthetic elastomers like neoprene fall into this category.

The monomer composition also dictates polymer types. Homopolymers are made up of only one type of monomer, while copolymers are formed from two or more different types of monomers. This structural diversity in polymerityyppejä leads to a vast range of material properties and applications.
