Polymeerivälitteisyys

Polymeerivälitteisyys, known in English as polymer mediation or polymer effect, refers to the phenomenon where the presence of a polymer in a solution influences the rate or mechanism of a chemical reaction. This influence can be either positive, accelerating the reaction, or negative, retarding it.

The underlying principle of polymeerivälitteisyys lies in the ability of polymer chains to interact with reactants, intermediates, or transition states of a chemical process. These interactions can occur through various forces, including van der Waals forces, hydrogen bonding, electrostatic interactions, or hydrophobic effects. The polymer can effectively create a microenvironment that differs significantly from the bulk solution, altering the local concentrations of reactants or stabilizing/destabilizing reactive species.

One common mechanism involves the physical entrapment of reactants within the polymer coil. This can lead to increased local concentrations, thereby enhancing the reaction rate. Alternatively, the polymer might orient reactant molecules in a favorable way for reaction, acting as a template. In some cases, the polymer can sequester or bind to inhibitory species, thereby removing them from the reaction pathway and accelerating the overall process. Conversely, polymers can also hinder reactions by blocking access of reactants to the active site or by strongly binding to a reactant, reducing its availability.
