PMD is caused by the asymmetry in the refractive index of the fiber, which leads to different propagation speeds for the two polarisation modes. The degree of PMD is typically measured in units of picoseconds per square root of kilometer (ps/sqrt(km)). The PMD coefficient is a measure of the average PMD over a given length of fiber.

Several techniques are used to mitigate PMD in optical systems. One common method is to use polarization-maintaining fibers, which have a symmetrical refractive index profile and thus do not exhibit PMD. Another approach is to use polarization-mode dispersion compensators, which are devices that introduce a controlled amount of PMD to counteract the PMD in the fiber. Additionally, advanced modulation formats and digital signal processing techniques can be employed to reduce the impact of PMD on system performance.

PMD is a complex and dynamic phenomenon, and its effects can vary depending on factors such as temperature, strain, and the specific characteristics of the fiber. As a result, PMD management is an important consideration in the design and operation of high-speed optical networks.
