PoEcapable

PoEcapable is a designation used to describe networking equipment that can transmit or receive electrical power over an Ethernet connection. In practice, PoEcapable devices may act as Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), supplying DC power on a port, or as Powered Devices (PD), receiving power from a PoE link, depending on device type and standard.

Standards and power levels: The main PoE standards are IEEE 802.3af (PoE), IEEE 802.3at (PoE+), and IEEE 802.3bt (PoE++). PoE provides up to about 15 W per port, PoE+ up to about 30 W, and PoE++ Type 3 or Type 4 up to 60–90 W per port, with the actual delivered power limited by the PSE’s budget and cable losses. Power negotiation is performed via detection and classification; many devices also support LLDP-based power negotiation for enhanced control.

Delivery and cabling: PoE power is carried over the same Ethernet cable used for data. Power can be delivered using spare pairs or data pairs, depending on the mode. Typical Ethernet cabling (Cat5e/6/6a) supports PoE, and the maximum recommended link length is 100 meters to maintain performance and safety.

Applications and safety: PoEcapable ports enable deployment of IP cameras, VoIP phones, wireless access points, and other devices without nearby AC outlets, simplifying installation and reducing clutter. Equipment should comply with the relevant IEEE standards and be installed within thermal and electrical ratings, with appropriate protection and adherence to electrical safety guidelines.
