Planetära

Planetära is a Swedish adjective meaning planetary or relating to planets. It is used to describe things associated with planets, planetary systems, or planetary-scale phenomena. In scientific Swedish it appears in compounds such as planetär geologi (planetary geology), planetär atmosfär (planetary atmosphere), and planetära system (planetary systems). The form planetära is the inflected variant used when the noun is plural or definite (for example planetära system or de planetära systemen).

Etymology and form: The term derives from the root planet-, which is shared with the English planetary and traces back to Latin planeta and Greek planētēs, meaning wanderer. In Swedish, adjectives of this type take different inflectional endings; planetär becomes planetära in certain contexts to agree with the noun in number and definiteness.

Usage and scope: Planetära is most common in astronomy, planetary science, and geoscience discussions. It can describe physical characteristics (planetära ytor, planetary surfaces), processes (planetära klimat, planetary climate), or structures (planetära system, planetary rings). When Swedish writers discuss concepts borrowed from English, they may also use the English loanword planetary, but planetär/planetära remains standard for native-language technical writing.
