Pikselöityä

Pikselöityä is a Finnish verb that describes the process of becoming pixelated or breaking down into individual pixels. This phenomenon typically occurs in digital images and videos when they are displayed at a resolution lower than their native resolution, or when they are scaled up significantly. As a result, the smooth appearance of the image is lost, and the individual square units of color, known as pixels, become visibly distinct.

The term "pikselöityä" can also be used metaphorically to describe a situation where something becomes fragmented, unclear, or loses its coherence. For instance, a complex argument might be said to "pikselöityä" if it breaks down into disconnected points that are difficult to follow. Similarly, a person's memory might "pikselöityä" if it becomes fragmented and details are lost.

In the context of digital media, severe pixelation can render an image or video unusable or aesthetically displeasing. It is often an indicator of low-quality source material or improper processing. Modern display technologies and image processing algorithms aim to mitigate or avoid pixelation, but it remains a fundamental characteristic of raster graphics.
