Pienhiukkaspäästö, often referred to as PM, denotes the release of fine particulate matter into the atmosphere. These particles are microscopic solids or liquids suspended in the air. Their small size, typically less than 10 micrometers in diameter, allows them to penetrate deep into the respiratory system and even enter the bloodstream.

Sources of pienhiukkaspäästö are diverse and can be categorized as either primary or secondary.
