PhosphatIonen

Phosphationen is a term found in German-language chemical literature that may refer to phosphate-containing species (phosphate ions) as well as the process of phosphorylation. In English-language texts, the corresponding terms are phosphate ions and phosphorylation; the exact meaning depends on context.

In aqueous solution, phosphate exists in several protonation states: phosphate PO4^3-, hydrogen phosphate HPO4^2-, and dihydrogen phosphate H2PO4^-. These forms are connected by acid-base equilibria with three dissociation steps in phosphoric acid (H3PO4 to H2PO4^-, to HPO4^2-, to PO4^3-). Polyphosphates, such as pyrophosphate P2O7^4-, and longer-chain phosphorus-oxygen anions, can form under dehydration or condensation conditions.
