Phonotactics refers to the set of rules governing the permissible sequence of sounds or phonemes within a syllable or word in a given language. These rules dictate which sound combinations are possible and which are not, contributing to the characteristic sound patterns of a language. For example, in English, the combination "tl" is not allowed at the beginning of a word, but it is permissible in other positions. Conversely, languages like Turkish allow initial consonant clusters that would be unpronounceable in English.

The study of phonotactics is crucial for understanding the phonological structure of languages. It helps explain why certain loanwords are adapted to fit the native phonotactic constraints of a language, such as the insertion of vowels to break up disallowed consonant clusters. Phonotactic rules are often unconscious for native speakers, who intuitively know which sound sequences are acceptable. Variation exists not only between languages but also within dialects of the same language. Understanding these constraints is fundamental in fields like linguistics, speech synthesis, and language acquisition.
