Phocaeaits

Phocaeaits refers to the inhabitants of Phocaea, an ancient Greek city located on the coast of Ionia, in modern-day Turkey. The city was founded by Ionians and Aeolians around the 11th century BCE. Phocaea was a prominent maritime power, known for its seafaring capabilities and extensive trade networks.

The Phocaeans were renowned for their adventurous spirit and were among the first Greeks to venture into the western Mediterranean. They established numerous colonies, including Massalia (modern Marseille), Emporiae (modern Empuriabrava), and Velia (ancient Elea). Their voyages took them as far as the Pillars of Hercules, and they were instrumental in the spread of Greek culture and commerce throughout the region.

The city itself was characterized by its impressive harbor and its strategic location, which facilitated its commercial success.
