Phloeminitial

Phloeminitial is a term used in plant biology to refer to the undifferentiated cells within the vascular cambium that give rise to the phloem. The vascular cambium is a lateral meristem responsible for secondary growth in plants, producing both xylem and phloem. Within this cambial layer, cells divide anticlinally (perpendicular to the cambial surface) and periclinally (parallel to the cambial surface). Phloeminitials are those cells that undergo periclinal division to produce secondary phloem on the outer side of the cambium.

These initial cells are crucial for the continuous production of phloem tissue, which is essential for transporting sugars produced during photosynthesis from the leaves to other parts of the plant, such as roots, fruits, and storage organs. The rate of division of phloeminitials and the differentiation of their daughter cells contribute to the overall diameter growth of woody plants.
