Phasenumwandlung refers to the process of changing the state of matter of a substance. This transformation occurs when the substance absorbs or releases energy, typically in the form of heat. The most common phase transitions involve solid, liquid, and gaseous states.

Melting, or fusion, is the transition from a solid to a liquid. This happens when a solid absorbs enough heat to overcome the forces holding its particles in a fixed structure. The temperature at which this occurs is known as the melting point. Conversely, freezing, or solidification, is the transition from a liquid to a solid. This occurs when a liquid loses heat, causing its particles to slow down and arrange themselves into a more ordered structure. The temperature at which this happens is the freezing point, which is usually the same as the melting point for a pure substance.

Boiling, or vaporization, is the transition from a liquid to a gas. This occurs when a liquid absorbs enough heat to allow its particles to escape from the liquid surface and become widely dispersed. The temperature at which this happens is the boiling point. Sublimation is a less common phase transition where a substance changes directly from a solid to a gas without passing through the liquid phase, such as dry ice (solid carbon dioxide) turning into gaseous carbon dioxide. Deposition is the reverse of sublimation, where a gas transforms directly into a solid.

These phase transitions are fundamental to many natural phenomena and industrial processes. Understanding them is crucial in fields like chemistry, physics, and engineering.
