Perusapteekit

Perusapteekit is the term used in Finland for the core network of community pharmacies. They are the standard retail pharmacies that operate nationwide, dispensing prescription medicines as well as over-the-counter products and providing a range of health-related services to the public. Perusapteekit are typically privately owned businesses but are licensed and regulated to ensure safe and reliable medication use. They are staffed by licensed pharmacists and trained staff who offer medication counseling, correct dispensing, dosage instructions, and safety checks for potential drug interactions, allergies, and adverse effects.

Regulation and professional standards: Perusapteekit operate under Finnish pharmacy and medicines legislation, including the Pharmacy Act and related regulations. They are supervised by national authorities such as the Finnish Medicines Agency (Fimea) and regional/state regulatory bodies. They must maintain professional standards, protect patient information, ensure proper storage and handling of medicines, and report adverse drug reactions as required.

Services and role in health care: Beyond dispensing, perusapteekit provide services such as medication reviews, adherence support, immunization campaigns where available, and basic health screenings. They serve as accessible points for medical advice and collaborate with other parts of the health system, including reimbursement processes through Kela (the Social Insurance Institution) for eligible medicines. Many offer digital services, including online orders and e-prescriptions, while preserving pharmacist-led counseling.

Distribution and scope: Perusapteekit are distributed across urban and rural areas, including both chain-owned and independent pharmacies.
