The space is filled with fat and lymph nodes, which are part of the Waldeyer's ring, a group of lymphoid tissues that help protect the body from infections.

The peritonsillar space is a common site for infections, particularly those caused by Streptococcus pyogenes, which can lead to conditions such as peritonsillar abscess, peritonsillar cellulitis, and peritonsillar phlegmon. These infections can cause significant discomfort, swelling, and difficulty swallowing. Treatment typically involves antibiotics to clear the infection and, in severe cases, surgical drainage.

The peritonsillar space is also relevant in the context of tonsillectomy, a surgical procedure to remove the tonsils. During a tonsillectomy, the surgeon may need to carefully dissect through the peritonsillar space to access the tonsils. Post-operative care is crucial to prevent complications such as bleeding, infection, and airway obstruction.
