Cross-linguistically, past tense systems vary. Some languages rely on single inflected forms to indicate past time, while others use multiple past tenses with distinct aspectual meanings (for example, a preterite versus an imperfect). In many Romance languages, there are several past tenses such as the preterite and the imperfect, each with specific usage rules. In analytic languages, past time is often shown with auxiliary verbs or particles combined with a participle.
