Parafraas

Parafraas is a term that appears in some texts as a nonstandard spelling of paraphrase, the restatement of a text or speech in different words while preserving its meaning. It is not recognized as a distinct concept in mainstream linguistic or computational literature.

Etymology and usage reflect its irregular status. The standard English term is paraphrase, while related forms exist in other languages—paráfrasis in Spanish, parafrase in Dutch and Indonesian, and similar variants—making parafraas more likely a typographical variant or transliteration error than a separate term. In most linguistic references, parafraas is treated as a misspelling rather than a defined concept.

In scholarly and technical contexts, writers typically use the established spellings and terminology. When paraphrase-related tasks are discussed in natural language processing, common topics include paraphrase generation, paraphrase detection, and evaluation of paraphrase quality. If the form parafraas appears, it is usually regarded as an orthographic mistake rather than the name of a distinct theory or method.
