Pankreasvävnaden

Pankreasvävnaden, often referred to as pancreatic tissue, is the functional substance of the pancreas. This vital organ is located in the abdomen behind the stomach and plays a dual role in digestion and hormone production. The pancreatic tissue is broadly divided into two main types: exocrine and endocrine.

The exocrine component of the pankreasvävnaden is responsible for producing digestive enzymes. These enzymes, such as amylase, lipase, and proteases, are secreted into ducts that lead to the small intestine. Once in the intestine, these enzymes break down carbohydrates, fats, and proteins, aiding in nutrient absorption.

The endocrine portion of the pankreasvävnaden consists of clusters of cells known as the islets of Langerhans. These islets produce and secrete hormones directly into the bloodstream. The most well-known hormones are insulin and glucagon, which are crucial for regulating blood sugar levels. Insulin lowers blood glucose by promoting its uptake by cells, while glucagon raises blood glucose by stimulating the liver to release stored glucose. Other hormones like somatostatin and pancreatic polypeptide are also produced by the endocrine tissue, contributing to various regulatory functions. Diseases affecting pankreasvävnaden, such as pancreatitis or diabetes, can have significant health consequences.
