Panelguard

Panelguard is a coating that was developed in the mid-20th century to protect surfaces from corrosion, particularly in naval and industrial applications. It was known for its ability to form a clear, flexible film on metal surfaces, which provided a barrier against seawater and other corrosive substances.

The original Panelguard formula was developed by the Owens-Corning Fiberglas company, which launched the product in the 1960s. The coating consisted of a mixture of resins, waxes, and other additives that adhered to metal surfaces and prevented rust and corrosion. Panelguard's unique properties made it an attractive solution for protecting ship hulls, propellers, and other equipment exposed to harsh marine environments.

One of the key benefits of Panelguard was its ease of application. It could be sprayed or brushed onto metal surfaces without the need for specialized equipment, and it cured quickly to form a hard, durable film. This allowed maintenance teams to paint and protect large areas of metal quickly and efficiently.

In addition to its use in the marine industry, Panelguard was also employed in various heavy industrial settings, such as chemical plants, power generation facilities, and nuclear reactors. However, its use declined in the latter half of the 20th century due to the development of newer, more advanced coatings and sealants. Today, Panelguard remains a notable example of a pioneering corrosion prevention technology, but its applications are largely historical and limited to specific industries and contexts.
