PIDdiagramme

A PID diagramme, or Process Identification diagramme, is a simplified schematic used in chemical engineering and process control to illustrate the essential components of a process and their interrelationships. It is a high-level representation, focusing on the key control loops rather than detailed equipment specifics. The primary purpose of a PID diagramme is to visualize the control strategy for a particular process.

The core elements of a PID diagramme include the process itself, typically represented by a block, and the control system. The control system is usually broken down into its fundamental components: the sensor, which measures a process variable; the controller, which implements a Proportional-Integral-Derivative (PID) control algorithm; and the final control element, which manipulates a manipulated variable to influence the process. Arrows indicate the flow of information and material. For instance, an arrow might show the process variable being measured by the sensor, then sent to the controller, which in turn sends a signal to the final control element.

PID diagrammes are valuable tools for understanding, designing, and troubleshooting control systems. They provide a clear overview of how a process is intended to be controlled, making it easier for engineers to communicate complex control strategies and identify potential areas for improvement. While not as detailed as a Piping and Instrumentation Diagram (P&ID), the PID diagramme offers a crucial perspective on the control logic and instrumentation involved in maintaining desired process conditions.
