PEGlääkkeet, also known as PEGylated drugs, are pharmaceutical compounds that have been modified by the attachment of polyethylene glycol (PEG) molecules. This modification process, called PEGylation, is a common strategy in drug development to improve the pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties of therapeutic agents.

The primary benefit of PEGylation is the extended half-life of the drug in the body. The bulky PEG chains can shield the drug from rapid enzymatic degradation and renal clearance, leading to less frequent dosing for patients. This can significantly improve patient compliance and reduce the overall treatment burden. Additionally, PEGylation can reduce the immunogenicity of certain protein-based drugs, minimizing the risk of adverse immune responses.

PEGylated drugs are used in a wide range of therapeutic areas, including oncology, immunology, and hematology. Examples include PEGylated interferons for treating hepatitis C, PEGylated G-CSF for stimulating white blood cell production, and PEGylated asparaginase for acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The size and structure of the PEG chain can be tailored to optimize the drug's properties for its intended use. While PEGylation offers significant advantages, it can also sometimes affect the drug's efficacy or introduce new side effects related to the PEG molecule itself.
