Pääpolymeraasia

Pääpolymeraasia, often translated as "main polymerization," refers to the primary stage of a polymerization reaction where the bulk of the polymer chains are formed. This stage is characterized by a high rate of monomer consumption and a rapid increase in the molecular weight of the polymer. In many polymerization processes, the main polymerization follows an initiation phase, where reactive species are generated, and precedes a termination phase, where chain growth ceases.

The kinetics of the main polymerization are typically described by the rates of propagation, chain transfer, and termination. The propagation rate is directly proportional to the concentration of monomer and growing polymer radicals or ions. Chain transfer reactions can lead to the formation of new radicals or ions, initiating new polymer chains or terminating existing ones, thus affecting the molecular weight distribution. Termination can occur through combination or disproportionation of growing chains.

Understanding the main polymerization stage is crucial for controlling the properties of the final polymer, such as its molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, and branching.
