Oxidující refers to the process of oxidation, a fundamental chemical reaction. In oxidation, a chemical species loses electrons. This loss of electrons is typically accompanied by an increase in oxidation state. Oxidizing agents, also known as oxidants, are substances that cause oxidation in another chemical species by accepting electrons from it. When an oxidizing agent accepts electrons, it itself undergoes reduction, meaning its oxidation state decreases.

Common oxidizing agents include oxygen gas (O2), halogens like chlorine (Cl2) and bromine (Br2), peroxides (e.g., hydrogen peroxide, H2O2), and permanganates (e.g., potassium permanganate, KMnO4). The reactivity of an oxidizing agent is often related to its electronegativity, its ability to attract electrons. Strong oxidizing agents readily accept electrons and can cause significant chemical changes.

Oxidation reactions are ubiquitous in nature and technology. Combustion, the burning of fuels, is a rapid oxidation process involving oxygen. The rusting of iron is a slower oxidation reaction. In biological systems, cellular respiration is a series of oxidation-reduction reactions that generate energy for living organisms. Many industrial processes, such as the production of chemicals and the treatment of wastewater, rely on oxidation. Understanding oxidizing processes is crucial for chemistry, environmental science, and materials science.
