Oogtumoren

Oogtumoren, also known as ocular tumors, are abnormal growths that develop within or on the eye. These growths can be benign (non-cancerous) or malignant (cancerous). The type and location of an oogtumor can significantly impact vision and overall health.

Common types of oogtumoren include melanoma, which is the most frequent primary intraocular malignancy in adults, originating in the pigmented cells of the uvea. Retinoblastoma is a malignant tumor that develops in immature retinal cells and primarily affects young children. Other types include conjunctival tumors, which occur on the surface of the eye, and tumors of the eyelid.

Symptoms of oogtumoren vary depending on the tumor's size, location, and type. They can include changes in vision such as blurred vision, floaters, flashing lights, or a loss of peripheral vision. A visible mass on the eye or eyelid, pain, redness, or a bulging eye are also potential indicators. In some cases, oogtumoren may be asymptomatic and detected during a routine eye examination.

Diagnosis typically involves a comprehensive eye exam, including visual acuity tests, ophthalmoscopy, and imaging techniques like ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI. Biopsies may be performed to determine the exact nature of the tumor.

Treatment approaches for oogtumoren are tailored to the specific type, stage, and location of the tumor, as well as the patient's overall health. Options may include observation, radiation therapy, chemotherapy, laser therapy, cryotherapy, or surgery, which can range from local excision to enucleation (removal of the eye). Early detection and treatment are crucial for preserving vision and improving outcomes.
