OnsetStrukturen is a term used in linguistic phonetics and phonology to describe the initial sound or sequence of sounds in a syllable. It is the part of the syllable that precedes the nucleus, which is typically a vowel. The onset can consist of a single consonant, a consonant cluster, or even be absent, resulting in a vowel-initiated syllable.

For example, in the English word "stop," the syllable "stop" has an onset of /st/, a nucleus of /ɒ/, and a coda of /p/. In the word "apple," the first syllable "ap" has an onset that is absent (or null), the nucleus is /æ/, and the coda is /p/. The second syllable "ple" has an onset of /pl/, a nucleus of /ə/, and no coda.

The structure of the onset is subject to the phonotactic rules of a particular language, which dictate which consonant or consonant combinations are permissible at the beginning of a syllable. These rules vary significantly across languages. For instance, some languages allow complex consonant clusters in the onset, while others are much more restricted.
