Omistusmuodosta is the genitive form of the Finnish noun omistusmuoto, a term used to refer to the linguistic concept of possession or ownership forms. In Finnish grammar, omistusmuoto describes how possession is marked on a noun or within a noun phrase. The most common mechanism is the possessive suffix attached to the possessed noun, yielding forms such as taloni (my house), talosi (your house), talonsa (his/her/its house), talomme (our house), talonne (your house, plural), and talonsa (their house). The exact shape of the suffix depends on the possessor’s person and number, and on vowel harmony rules.

In addition to suffixes on the noun, Finnish uses possessive pronouns (omistuspronominit) such as minun (my), sinun (your), hänen (his/her/its), meidän (our), teidän (your, plural), heidän (their) to express possession before a noun. These can be used with or without a following noun, depending on the construction.

Genitive constructions, for example, express possession in noun phrases without the possessive suffix on the possessed noun, as in talon väri (the color of the house).
