Olomuodonmuutokset

Olomuodonmuutokset refers to changes in the state of matter. These are physical processes where a substance transforms from one state to another without altering its chemical composition. The most common states of matter are solid, liquid, and gas.

Melting is the transition from a solid to a liquid state, occurring at the melting point. For example, ice melts into water. Freezing is the opposite process, where a liquid turns into a solid at its freezing point. Water freezes into ice.

Boiling is the transition from a liquid to a gas, happening at the boiling point. When water boils, it becomes steam. Condensation is the reverse of boiling, where a gas turns back into a liquid. Steam condenses into water droplets.

Sublimation is a less common olomuodonmuutokset, where a solid directly transforms into a gas without passing through the liquid phase. Dry ice, which is solid carbon dioxide, sublimes at room temperature. Deposition is the opposite of sublimation, where a gas directly changes into a solid. Frost forming on a cold surface is an example of deposition.

These changes of state are driven by changes in temperature and pressure. Adding energy, usually in the form of heat, typically causes a substance to transition to a less ordered state (e.g., solid to liquid, liquid to gas). Conversely, removing energy leads to a more ordered state. Pressure also plays a role; for instance, increasing pressure can lower the boiling point of a liquid.
