Oksimyhdisteet

Oksimyhdisteet, also known as oximes, are a class of organic compounds characterized by the presence of the C=NOH functional group. This functional group is formed through the reaction of an aldehyde or a ketone with hydroxylamine. The general structure of an oxime can be represented as R1R2C=NOH, where R1 and R2 can be hydrogen atoms or organic groups.

Oximes exhibit isomerism due to the restricted rotation around the C=N double bond, leading to the existence of syn and anti isomers. These isomers differ in the relative positions of the hydroxyl group and one of the substituents on the carbon atom. The physical and chemical properties of syn and anti oximes can vary.

Chemically, oximes are versatile intermediates in organic synthesis. They can be hydrolyzed back to the parent carbonyl compound and hydroxylamine under acidic conditions. Oximes are also precursors to other functional groups. For example, reduction of oximes can yield amines, while dehydration can lead to nitriles. The Beckmann rearrangement is a well-known reaction where oximes, particularly ketoximes, rearrange to form amides under acidic conditions.

In terms of applications, oximes find use as intermediates in the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, and polymers. Some oximes themselves have direct applications, such as in analytical chemistry for the detection and quantification of carbonyl compounds, and in medicine as prodrugs or active pharmaceutical ingredients.
