Oksüdatsioonitasemel refers to the oxidation state of an atom within a molecule or compound. It is a bookkeeping concept used to track the hypothetical charge an atom would have if all bonds to atoms of different elements were completely ionic. This means that the electrons in a bond are assigned entirely to the more electronegative atom. The oxidation state is an integer, which can be positive, negative, or zero. Pure elements in their standard state have an oxidation state of zero. For ions, the oxidation state is equal to the charge of the ion. In compounds, there are a set of general rules to determine oxidation states. For example, oxygen usually has an oxidation state of -2, except in peroxides where it is -1, and when bonded to fluorine. Hydrogen typically has an oxidation state of +1 when bonded to nonmetals and -1 when bonded to metals. The sum of the oxidation states of all atoms in a neutral molecule must equal zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it must equal the charge of the ion. Understanding oxidation states is crucial for balancing redox reactions and predicting chemical reactivity.
