Oksüdatsiooniregistrid are a concept used in chemistry to track the oxidation states of atoms within a molecule or compound. An oxidation state, also known as an oxidation number, is a hypothetical charge that an atom would have if all bonds to atoms of different elements were 100% ionic. These registers are not physical entities but rather bookkeeping tools to apply the rules of oxidation and reduction. When a chemical reaction occurs, electrons are transferred, leading to changes in the oxidation states of the participating atoms. The sum of oxidation states in a neutral molecule is always zero, and in a polyatomic ion, it equals the charge of the ion. By assigning oxidation states, chemists can determine which species are oxidized (lose electrons, oxidation state increases) and which are reduced (gain electrons, oxidation state decreases). This is fundamental to understanding redox reactions, electrochemistry, and many chemical transformations. The process of assigning oxidation states follows a set of established rules, such as assigning a +1 oxidation state to alkali metals and a -2 oxidation state to oxygen in most compounds.
