Odiliënberg

Odiliënberg is a village in the province of Limburg in the Netherlands. It is part of the municipality of Roermond and is located in the southern part of the country, near the city of Roermond.

The village grew from the Saint Odiliënberg Abbey, a medieval monastery established on the site that served as a focal point for the local community for many centuries. After the late 18th century, during periods of secularization, the abbey declined and most of the buildings fell into ruin. Today, the remnants of the abbey and a nearby church remain as historical landmarks that reflect the area’s medieval past.

The name Odiliënberg derives from Saint Odilia and the hill on which the monastery was built, a combination that has shaped the local identity for generations.

Present-day Odiliënberg is a small residential and agricultural community with a rural character. It has a local church and basic facilities for residents, and the surrounding countryside is used for farming and recreation. The village maintains its historical character within the Roermond municipality and is part of the broader Limburg region in the Netherlands.
