Observablat

Observablat is a cloud-native observability platform designed to collect, store, and analyze telemetry data from distributed applications. It supports metrics, logs, and traces, and emphasizes interoperability with open standards such as OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, and Jaeger. The project aims to provide scalable ingestion, unified querying, and end-user dashboards across multi-cloud environments.

Observablat was founded in 2020 by a group of developers and operators from the open-source community. The first stable release appeared in 2021, with ongoing development driven by a core team and community contributors. The project aims to serve both large deployments and smaller teams seeking an opinionated yet pluggable observability stack.

The platform uses a modular architecture consisting of a data plane for ingestion and processing, a control plane for configuration and permissions, and a storage layer for time-series metrics, logs, and traces. Ingest supports OpenTelemetry, Prometheus scraping, and Jaeger-compatible traces. The query layer enables cross-domain searches and correlation, while dashboards and alerting enable operator workflows. Optional sidecars or agents can be deployed with services, and the system supports multi-tenancy and role-based access control.

Observablat is released under an open-source license (Apache 2.0) with commercial support options. It offers deployments on-premises, in public clouds, or as a managed service. The ecosystem includes integrations with Grafana, Kubernetes, and popular cloud monitoring stacks; its community provides plugins and tutorials. Limitations include operational complexity for small teams and performance tuning for large-scale deployments.
