OSIlayer

The OSI model, or Open Systems Interconnection model, is a conceptual framework used to standardize the functions of a telecommunication or computing system in terms of abstraction layers. It divides network communication into seven distinct layers, each responsible for a specific set of tasks. This layered approach simplifies the design and troubleshooting of complex network protocols.

The seven layers, from bottom to top, are the Physical Layer, Data Link Layer, Network Layer, Transport Layer, Session Layer, Presentation Layer, and Application Layer. The Physical Layer deals with the raw bit transmission over a physical medium. The Data Link Layer handles error detection and correction within a local network segment. The Network Layer is responsible for logical addressing and routing of data packets across different networks. The Transport Layer ensures reliable data transfer between end systems, managing flow control and segmentation.

The Session Layer establishes, manages, and terminates communication sessions between applications. The Presentation Layer handles data translation, encryption, and compression, ensuring data is in a usable format. Finally, the Application Layer provides network services directly to end-user applications, such as email or web browsing. While not a strict implementation standard, the OSI model serves as a valuable reference for understanding and discussing network functions.
