ORCIDtunnus, or ORCID iD, is a unique and persistent identifier assigned to researchers and contributors by the nonprofit ORCID organization. It is designed to unambiguously identify individuals in scholarly communications and research workflows, helping to distinguish authors with similar names and to link their work across different platforms.

An ORCIDtunnus links a researcher to their works, affiliations, and funding across publishers, databases, and funders. By providing a standardized identifier, it facilitates metadata integration, author attribution, and the aggregation of a researcher’s activities. The identifier is associated with an ORCID record that can include biographical details, employment history, education, works, and funding information. The record is managed by the user and can be kept private or made public according to the user’s preferences.

An ORCIDtunnus is a 16-digit number formatted with hyphens, such as 0000-0002-1825-0097. The iD remains constant over a researcher’s career, even as names or affiliations change. Registration is free and completed at ORCID.org. After creating an account, users can add publications, affiliations, and connect external systems and identifiers. Privacy settings allow control over what information is visible, and users can revoke permissions granted to third-party applications.

Adoption of ORCIDtunnus is widespread in academia, with many journals, publishers, funders, and institutions encouraging or requiring authors to provide their ORCID iD. The system aims to improve discoverability, accuracy of attribution, and interoperability across the research ecosystem, contributing to more efficient evaluation and reporting of scholarly work.
