Näytteenpitoketju, translated as "sample chain of custody," refers to the documented chronological history of a specimen's handling from its collection to its final disposal or analysis. This process is crucial in scientific, legal, and forensic contexts to ensure the integrity and reliability of evidence. A properly maintained näytteenpitoketju guarantees that the sample has not been tampered with, altered, or substituted.

The chain of custody begins at the point of sample collection. Detailed records are made at this stage, including the date, time, location of collection, the identity of the collector, and a unique identifier for the sample. Any subsequent transfer of the sample must also be meticulously documented. This includes who received the sample, when it was received, and the purpose of the transfer. Each individual who handles the sample signs and dates the documentation, creating an unbroken record.

Storage conditions are also a critical part of the chain of custody. Information about how and where the sample was stored, including temperature and security measures, is recorded to prevent degradation or contamination. If the sample is transported, the mode of transport and the chain of custody documentation travel with it. Finally, when the sample is analyzed or used in court, the documentation confirms its authenticity and proper handling throughout its journey. Any break in this chain can render the sample inadmissible as evidence.
