Näringsvävnad

Näringsvävnad, also known as nutritive tissue, is a specialized type of tissue found in plants that provides nourishment to the developing embryo. It is a key component of the seed, playing a crucial role in its germination and subsequent growth. The primary function of näringsvävnad is to store and supply essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins, and lipids to the embryo during its early stages of development when it cannot yet photosynthesize effectively.

There are different types of näringsvävnad found in seeds. The most common is the endosperm, which is formed after fertilization and is often consumed by the developing embryo. In some plants, the cotyledons, which are the embryonic leaves, can also serve as the primary storage tissue for nutrients, effectively becoming näringsvävnad. In certain cases, the perisperm, which is derived from the maternal tissue of the ovule, can also function as nutritive tissue.
