These divisions help in analyzing and understanding the structure and development of an economy. Typically, economies are categorized into three main sectors: primary, secondary, and tertiary.

The primary sector involves the extraction and production of raw materials directly from the earth. This includes activities such as agriculture, forestry, fishing, mining, and quarrying. These industries form the foundation of many economies, providing the basic resources needed for other sectors.

The secondary sector, also known as the manufacturing or industrial sector, involves the processing of raw materials into finished goods. This includes manufacturing, construction, and energy production. This sector adds value to the raw materials by transforming them into usable products through industrial processes.

The tertiary sector, or the service sector, encompasses a wide range of activities that do not produce tangible goods but provide services to consumers and other businesses. This includes retail, transportation, healthcare, education, finance, tourism, and information technology. In developed economies, the tertiary sector is typically the largest and fastest-growing. Some economists also identify a quaternary sector (knowledge-based services like IT and R&D) and a quinary sector (high-level decision-making).
