Nyelvtudományban (Hungarian: "in linguistics") refers to the study of language as a scientific discipline. It encompasses descriptive and theoretical efforts to analyze the structure, use, development, and cognitive and social functions of human language. The field examines sound systems, word formation, sentence structure, meaning, and language use in context, and it situates these elements within broader cognitive, cultural, and historical frameworks.

Major subfields include phonetics and phonology (speech sounds and their systems), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (language use). Applied and interdisciplinary branches address language acquisition, language teaching, sociolinguistics (language and society), psycholinguistics (language processing), historical and comparative linguistics, corpus linguistics, and computational linguistics or natural language processing.

Methods in nyelvtudományban range from descriptive fieldwork and corpus analysis to experimental and computational techniques. Researchers build and analyze linguistic corpora, conduct elicitation and controlled experiments, and develop formal models to account for linguistic patterns.

Applications of linguistics include language education, lexicography, translation studies, speech and language pathology, language planning and policy, and technological developments such as speech recognition and machine translation.
