Nutq

Nutq is a term used in Uzbek to denote speech, discourse, or oration. In linguistics, it refers to the actual act of speaking—the dynamic performance of language in real time—distinct from the underlying system of a language (til). Nutq encompasses pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, fluency, and the use of discourse structure in communication. It can be spontaneous or planned and varies by context, genre, and audience.

In education and language development, nutq is a focal point of study and instruction. Teachers cultivate nutq skills through speaking activities, listening, and dialogue, aiming to improve clarity, accuracy, and expressive ability. In the health sciences, nutq-related work appears in speech-language pathology and therapy, addressing articulation, fluency, and pragmatic use of language.

The term is widely used across Turkic-language communities and has cognates in related languages. A related Turkish term, Nutuk, means a formal public speech and is notable for its historical usage as a documented address by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. This illustrates how the concept of speech is central to culture and communication in the region.
