However, in recent decades, the rate of sea-level rise has accelerated, largely due to human-induced climate change. In contrast, other regions, such as the Pacific Northwest, are experiencing sea-level fall due to the ongoing rebound of the Earth's crust after the last ice age.

Adapting to sea-level changes is a major challenge for coastal communities and ecosystems. Strategies for mitigation and adaptation include the construction of sea walls and other coastal defenses, the development of early warning systems for flooding, and the implementation of land-use planning policies that limit development in vulnerable areas. Additionally, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change are essential for slowing the rate of sea-level rise and minimizing its impacts.
