These microorganisms are known for their role in nitrification, a two-step process that converts ammonia into nitrite. Specifically, Nitrosomonaslajit species are ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB). They utilize ammonia as their primary energy source, a process known as chemoautotrophy.
