Nitrogen-based refers to substances or systems in which nitrogen is a central element of the chemical structure or function. The term encompasses a broad range of compounds and materials, including inorganic nitrogen compounds such as ammonia (NH3), ammonium salts (NH4+), nitrates (NO3−) and nitrites (NO2−); as well as organic nitrogen compounds such as amines, amides, nitriles, nitro compounds, and azoles. It also includes nitrogen-containing polymers and materials used in industry, such as polyurethanes and various dyes, pharmaceuticals, and agrochemicals.

In nature and industry, nitrogen-based compounds are essential. The atmosphere is rich in inert N2, requiring energy-intensive processes to convert it into usable forms. Industrially, the Haber-Bosch process produces ammonia for fertilizer synthesis, while nitration, amination, and other reactions expand the range of nitrogen-containing products for chemicals, plastics, and medicines.

Applications include fertilizers such as urea and ammonium nitrate, which boost crop yields; nitrogen-containing drugs; polymers and specialty chemicals. Safety and environmental considerations are important: some nitrogen species are toxic or reactive, and nitrogen oxides (NOx) are pollutants formed during combustion; nitrates can contribute to water eutrophication, and certain nitro or explosive compounds pose handling hazards.

Ongoing research aims to improve sustainability of nitrogen use, reduce NOx emissions, and develop nitrogen fixation or recycling methods that lower energy demand and environmental impact. In biology, nitrogen is a key component of amino acids, nucleotides, and other biomolecules, highlighting its centrality across chemistry, industry, and life sciences.
