Neutrofiiliv refers to neutrophils, a type of white blood cell that plays a crucial role in the innate immune system. They are the most abundant type of granulocyte and are among the first responders to sites of acute inflammation. Neutrophils are characterized by their segmented nucleus and granular cytoplasm, which contains various enzymes and antimicrobial substances.

The primary function of neutrophils is phagocytosis, the process by which they engulf and destroy invading microorganisms, such as bacteria and fungi. They also release reactive oxygen species and antimicrobial peptides to kill pathogens. Neutrophils are attracted to sites of infection or injury by chemical signals called chemokines. Once at the site, they can migrate through blood vessel walls to reach the affected tissue.

Neutrophils are produced in the bone marrow and have a relatively short lifespan, typically a few days. Their presence in large numbers at an infection site is a hallmark of acute inflammation. While essential for fighting infection, excessive or prolonged neutrophil activity can contribute to tissue damage and chronic inflammatory diseases. The life cycle and function of neutrophils are tightly regulated to ensure effective defense without causing undue harm to the host.
