NetBIOS (Network Basic Input/Output System) is a protocol developed by IBM in the 1980s for application programming and network management. It provides services related to the session layer of the OSI model in network communication between computers. NetBIOS operates on top of the transport layer, typically using TCP/IP or NetBEUI (NetBIOS Extended User Interface) as the transport mechanism.

The protocol defines a programming interface that allows applications on separate computers to communicate over a local area network. It includes functions for session establishment and termination, message transmission, and name services. NetBIOS names are used to identify devices on the network, and these names are resolved to IP addresses using a name resolution service.

NetBIOS can operate in two modes: NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) and NetBIOS over NetBEUI. NetBT is the more common implementation, as it leverages the widespread use of TCP/IP in modern networks. NetBEUI, on the other hand, is a proprietary protocol developed by IBM and Microsoft for use in older networks.

One of the key features of NetBIOS is its ability to support both connection-oriented and connectionless communication. This flexibility allows it to be used in a variety of network environments and applications. However, due to its age and the rise of more modern protocols, NetBIOS has largely been replaced by other technologies in contemporary networks.
