Nauhoitusmedioissa refers to recording media, the physical or digital materials used to store audio or video information. Throughout history, various technologies have been developed for this purpose, evolving from analog to digital formats.

Early analog recording media included wax cylinders and vinyl records for audio, and magnetic tape for both audio and video. Wax cylinders, popular in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, were fragile and offered limited recording time. Vinyl records, introduced later, became the dominant audio format for decades, offering improved durability and playback quality. Magnetic tape, in forms like reel-to-reel and later cassette tapes, revolutionized audio and video recording, allowing for multiple recordings and editing capabilities.

The digital revolution brought about new forms of recording media. Compact Discs (CDs) for audio and later Digital Versatile Discs (DVDs) and Blu-ray discs for video offered higher fidelity and larger storage capacities than their analog predecessors. More recently, flash memory-based media such as USB drives, SD cards, and solid-state drives (SSDs) have become prevalent. These digital media offer portability, durability, and vast storage potential, and are integral to modern digital cameras, smartphones, and computers. Cloud storage also represents a significant evolution, offering a method of recording and accessing data without a physical, user-held medium. The choice of recording media depends on factors such as desired storage capacity, longevity, portability, and intended use.
