Naselje

Naselje is a term used in several South Slavic languages, including Croatian, Serbian, Bosnian, and Slovenian, to denote a populated place or settlement. It refers to a geographic area where people live and can refer to a city, town, village, or neighborhood. The word derives from the verb naseliti, meaning to settle or populate.

In many countries naselje is also an official administrative or statistical unit. Boundaries are defined for purposes such as censuses, land registration, urban planning, and the provision of services. A municipality or local government area can contain several naselja, and a single naselje may comprise multiple hamlets, streets, or residential neighborhoods. Conversely, a large naselje can extend across administrative borders in some contexts, and data about it are often collected at the naselje level for planning and governance.

Types and characteristics vary by country, but common distinctions include urban naselja, which cover cities, towns, and dense neighborhoods, and rural naselja, such as villages or dispersed settlements. Key attributes used in classification include population size, density, built environment, infrastructure, land use, and services. In everyday language, naselje can also refer to a housing estate or a newly developed residential area within a city.
