Naatriumikanaleid, also known as sodium channels, are integral membrane proteins that play a crucial role in the generation and propagation of action potentials in excitable cells. These channels are selectively permeable to sodium ions (Na+) and are responsible for the rapid influx of Na+ during the depolarization phase of an action potential. Naatriumikanaleid are found in various types of cells, including neurons, muscle cells, and certain epithelial cells.

The structure of sodium channels consists of four homologous domains, each containing six transmembrane segments (S1-S6). The S4 segment is particularly important as it contains positively charged amino acids that line the channel's selectivity filter, allowing only Na+ to pass through. The activation gate, located between the S5 and S6 segments, opens in response to membrane depolarization, facilitating the flow of Na+ into the cell.

The inactivation process involves the movement of a ball-and-chain motif within the channel, which temporarily blocks the pore and prevents further Na+ influx.

Mutations in sodium channel genes have been linked to several neurological and cardiovascular disorders, such as epilepsy, migraine, and certain types of heart rhythm abnormalities. Understanding the structure, function, and regulation of sodium channels is essential for developing targeted therapies for these conditions.
