Naalehu

Naalehu is a small census-designated place (CDP) located in the Puna District of the Island of Hawaii, part of the U.S. state of Hawaii. It is situated on the southeastern coast of the island, approximately 25 miles east of Hilo. Naalehu is known for its scenic beauty, with the Naalehu Valley offering panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, including the Mauna Loa volcano and the Pacific Ocean. The area is also home to the Naalehu River, which flows through the valley and provides a habitat for various plant and animal species.

The CDP of Naalehu was established in 2000 and has a population of around 1,000 residents. The local economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with sugarcane and coffee being the main crops. Tourism also plays a significant role in the area's economy, with visitors drawn to the scenic beauty and outdoor recreational opportunities. Naalehu is served by the Naalehu Airport, which offers small aircraft services and is used primarily for local travel and emergency medical evacuations.

The community of Naalehu is known for its strong sense of pride and resilience, particularly in the face of natural disasters. The area has experienced several volcanic eruptions from the Mauna Loa volcano, most notably in 1984, which caused significant damage to the town. Despite these challenges, the residents of Naalehu have worked to rebuild and maintain their community, contributing to its enduring appeal as a unique and picturesque destination on the Island of Hawaii.
