Mudbound
Mudbound is a 2017 American drama film directed by Dee Rees and written by Virgil Williams. The film is based on the 2008 novel of the same name by Hillary Jordan. It stars Garrett Hedlund, Jason Mitchell, and Mary J. Blige. The story is set in the early 1950s in the rural South, focusing on the relationship between two families: the white Hollins family and the black McAllan family. The Hollins family, led by the patriarch Henry (Hedlund), is struggling financially and seeks to expand their cotton farm. The McAllans, led by the matriarch Florence (Blige), are sharecroppers who have been working the Hollins land for generations. The film explores themes of race, class, and the complexities of human relationships. Mudbound received critical acclaim for its performances, direction, and screenplay. It was nominated for three Academy Awards, including Best Picture. The film's title refers to the muddy, unplowed fields that separate the two families' properties.
