Motoriyksikköön

Motoriyksikköön is a Finnish term that translates to "motor unit" in English. It refers to the fundamental functional unit of the neuromuscular system. A motor unit consists of a single motor neuron and all the muscle fibers it innervates. When a motor neuron receives a signal from the central nervous system, it fires an action potential, which travels down its axon to the muscle fibers. This signal causes the muscle fibers to contract, producing movement.

The number of muscle fibers within a motor unit can vary greatly. In muscles responsible for fine, precise movements, such as those in the eyes or fingers, a single motor neuron may control only a few muscle fibers. This allows for very delicate and controlled actions. In contrast, in muscles responsible for gross, powerful movements, such as those in the legs or back, a single motor neuron can innervate hundreds or even thousands of muscle fibers. This allows for significant force generation.

The recruitment of motor units is a key mechanism for controlling muscle force. When a weak contraction is needed, only a few motor units are activated. As the required force increases, more motor units are recruited, leading to a stronger overall contraction. This gradual recruitment allows for smooth and graded movements. The size principle of motor unit recruitment states that smaller, more easily excitable motor units are recruited first, followed by larger, less easily excitable motor units as the demand for force increases.
